Sydney's Evaluation Results

Syd's developmental evaluation was this morning. It took a little over 2 hours and she did a great job hanging in there with the ladies who did it. There was an RN and a SLP (Speech/Language).

I am happy to report that developmentally, she is completely in the normal range for her age. In many areas, she is above average, including her gross motor skills, which is no shock to us. She does have some sensory processing issues -- I am still learning, but I believe a simple definition for this is that she sometimes misinterprets everyday sensory information such as touch, sound and movement. Some kids feel bombarded with sensory information and others seek out intense sensory experiences or have other problems. This can lead to behavioral problems, difficulties with coordination and other issues. These ladies said they will be able to meet with her once a week until she is 3 and help her learn some coping skills and strategies to make her feel more comfortable when she is overstimulated or uneasy. After her 3rd birthday, she'll age out of this particular program, but they will help us find some appropriate therapy with an OT if they feel she needs it. OT therapy could help her manage her responses to sensory information and behave in a more appropriate manner in uncomfortable situations.

Most importantly, they said they feel she will be able to do just fine in a classroom setting when she starts preschool in the fall. A few coping strategies and an understanding teacher will help.

So, in a nutshell, we can help her a bit and she will be just fine. We are so thankful for our beautiful, smart, wonderful little girl and grateful that we have access to programs that will help her quality of life continue to improve.
